Three players are set to be
benefitted from Germany’s tennis star
Alexander Zverev’s surprising defeat in
the Japan Open.
The 26-year-old was knocked out of
the competition after losing the first-round clash to Australia’s Jordan Thompson
in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
That defeat was not only an embarrassing
one for the current world number nine but it has also dented his hopes of
cementing a berth in the ATP Finals.
As a result, three players — Denmark’s
Holger Rune, America’s
Taylor Fritz and Norway’s
Casper Ruud- benefitted from the result.
Zverev has a notable lead of 305, 450
and 620 points over the trio but all of them are currently playing in different
events.
Rune is taking part in Stockholm
where he is the defending champion. On the other hand, Fritz is playing the ATP 500
event in Tokyo where he will be also defending his title.
For Ruud to overcome the points difference,
he has to win back-to-back events, something which is not going to be easy at
all.
It was Zverev’s second consecutive
poor outing in an ATP event as previously he was knocked out of the Shanghai
Masters from the round of 64 after losing to Russia’s Roman Safiullin in straight
sets with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
