Holger Rune came back in spectacular fashion to defeat Botic van de Zandschulp once more 6-4 1-6 7-6(3) in Munich and lift his second consecutive BMW Munch Open trophy.
It was a rather crazy match between Rune and van de Zandschulp, quite a good showing after the short final we had last year. They contested last year's final as well but this time around we actually saw a match instead of one that was cut short by a retirement. Rune took the opening set 6-4 with some pretty impressive play.
He played the crucial rallies quite a bit better than his opponent and despite being broken he managed to break his opponent twice. The Dutch player had issues on his second serve as Rune attacked him in many of those rallies and that was the difference. The second set was very different, especially the score.
Botic took it 6-1 with some spectacular shot-making. It's very hard to play any better than that as it was pretty much a flawless set of play. The final one saw him continue with that for a good chunk as he held a 5-2 lead with Rune taking a medical timeout in it as well. He had two match points at 5-3 but wasted both to lose the game.
He allowed Rune to battle back entirely to a 5-5 score but then Rune dropped his serve once more. He saved two more match points in the next game as Botic double-faulted on break point. In the tiebreak, it was all Rune who closed it out 7-3.
