Danish tennis star Holger Rune has terminated his partnership with coach Severin Luthi, and Rune's mother Aneke has opened up on the reasons behind the split.
Luthi played a vital role in tennis great Roger Federer winning several Grand Slam titles, as he has been a part of the Swiss Maestro's team from 2007 till Federer's retirement in 2022. Rune began working with Luthi in December 2023, but the duo ended their relationship a few days after Rune's second-round exit at the 2024 Australian Open.

Aneke admits naivety may have played a role in hiring Luthi

In an interview on The Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast, Aneke Rune stated their decision to hire Luthi might have been influenced by his success with Federer. Furthermore, she questioned some of his methods, most of which were implemented during the Australian Open event.
"Maybe also we were a little naive, also a little you know starstruck like ‘Oh Roger [Federer], 20 Grand Slams, it’s not a problem to bring in a new coach’", said Aneke. "Clearly, it was naive. I think if you come in and you want to implement a lot of changes in the routines that the player normally do, this is great because if you’re No. 7 [Holger Rune's current rank], you’re not the best in the world.
"So, you need to do things differently in order to improve. What is tough here is starting to do the things at a Grand Slam. If we look back, then it was not the right timing to introduce new stuff because the player is more nervous at Grand Slams."
