The coaching merry-go-round continues for Holger Rune with Severin Luthi recently quitting as his coach and Boris Becker following suit now with immediate effect. Only Kenneth Carlsen who was recently appointed to replace Luthi now remains.
Becker published a statement on Tuesday afternoon on social media confirming the news. Rune and Becker seemed to have a harmonious partnership that worked after joining forces towards the back end of the 2023 season. Still, they were hampered by Becker not being able to enter Australia due to his stint in prison and this would also affect him in the US and UK. As a result, he decided instead to have a stint with Eurosport at the Australian Open and even critiqued his charge after losing to Arthur Cazaux.
In a similar reason to Luthi, Becker said that the schedules didn't align for them to get the maximum time needed for Rune and so they have gone their separate ways. The Dane recently reached the latter stages in Montpellier over the past week but had to retire due to injury against Borna Coric. But now he will also have to search for a new lead coach ahead of the Middle East and Sunshine Double.
"I would like to inform you that I will step down as the head coach of Holger Rune with immediate effect. We started this partnership with the initial goal of reaching the ATP Finals end of last year but moving forward I realised that for this to be successful, I would need to be available for Holger much more than I can," said Becker on X (formerly known as Twitter). "Due to professional and private responsibilities, I can’t give Holger what he needs now. I wish him only the very best and I’m always going to be his n.1 fan. I truly appreciated this journey together."
