Holger Rune
withdraws from ATP 250
Los Cabos Open, continuing an inconsistent 2024. The
Danish player once again pulls out of a tournament and will return for the
Sunshine Double in Indian Wells, where he will be the 6th seed.
The young
Danish player started the year in good form, reaching the final of the Brisbane
International, although he fell to an inspired Grigor Dimitrov (6-7, 4-6).
Since then, Rune has struggled to maintain his level and experiences his second
forced withdrawal from a tournament.
Just two
weeks ago, the 20-year-old athlete reached the semifinals at Open Sud de France
in Montpellier but retired mid-match against Borna Coric (3-6, 1-4, ret.).
Afterward, Rune traveled to Oslo to participate in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown
exhibition tournament and had his last performance this week at the ATP 500
Rotterdam Open, where he was the third seed but was eliminated in the second
round by Aleksandr Schevchenko (No. 57).
Instability
in Rune's team
The world No. 7 has faced difficulties in recent months in
finding stability in his coaching team. The Danish player made a leap in
quality in 2022 when he started working with Patrick Mouratoglou, securing his
first Masters 1000 title just a few weeks later at Paris-Bercy.
However, he
parted ways with Mouratoglou months later after the Wimbledon elimination,
having suffered six defeats in his next seven matches. Rune brought in Boris
Becker towards the end of the year and joined forces with Severin Luthi (former
coach of Roger Federer) as Rune's coaching duo.
Recently,
former world No. 1 Becker announced his separation from Rune due to conflicts
with his schedule, and a few days later, the young Danish player also parted
ways with Luthi.
This adds
to the departure of his mother Aneke as Rune's communication manager. He has
now hired the International Management Group (IMG) for communication
responsibilities, which also represents young stars like Carlos Alcaraz, Iga
Swiatek, and Emma Raducanu.
