Toni Nadal
expressed his confidence in his nephew
Rafael Nadal's ability to claim the
French Open title once again. The Spanish coach made a prediction that the
former world No. 1 would secure his 15th
Roland Garros victory despite the
challenges posed by injuries in the past year.
Rafa Nadal
returned to action in early January at the Brisbane International, securing
wins against Dominic Thiem and Jason Kubler. However, he faced a quarterfinal
defeat against local player Jordan Thompson, squandering three match points.
The
22-times Grand Slam champion had hoped for a healthy return this year but has
already withdrawn from the Australian Open and subsequently the
Qatar Open. His
second tournament of the year is now set for early March at Indian Wells.
“I would
have loved to play in Doha, where the tournament team, as well as the amazing
Qatar fans, have always supported me greatly,” said Nadal in a social media
post.
Despite Rafa's current form, his uncle Toni Nadal believes he will once again
claim the title in France: "I still think that Rafael will go to Roland
Garros [this year] and that he will win," he asserted.
Toni, currently Felix Auger-Aliassime's coach, emphasized the
importance of the Olympic Games for Rafa Nadal, where he won gold in singles
(Beijing 2008) and doubles (Rio 2016): “The Games, for anyone, even for those
who have other tournaments like Wimbledon in tennis, due to a tradition and a
desire of any athlete, are something special,” Nadal added.
“[He told
me] the Beijing Games were the best experience he had ever had, which he won
thanks to the rest of the Spanish athletes and the atmosphere there.”
