Jannik
Sinner secured a spot in the semifinals of the
Rotterdam Open after a great
match against
Milos Raonic, which unfortunately ended with the Canadian
retiring due to injury when the score was 7-6(4), 1-1.
The Italian
tennis player extended his winning streak to 13 consecutive victories in 2024
without conceding a defeat yet. The recent Australian Open champion will now
seek a place in the final when he faces Tallon Griekspoor in the semifinals,
who advanced after defeating Emil Ruusuvuori 7-5, 7-6(4).
Raonic
provided a big surprise in Rotterdam by securing two consecutive wins against
Jesper de Jong and the 8th seed Aleksander Bublik with impressive performances.
Although Sinner was the overwhelming favorite this time, Raonic managed to push
the young Italian to the limit.
In the
first set, both players showcased their strength in serving, but Sinner was the
first to take the lead in the 5th game with a break. In his next service game,
Sinner couldn't confirm his advantage and conceded two break points, which
Raonic eventually capitalized on to level the set 3-3.
Serving at
4-5, 15-40, Sinner faced two set points for Raonic, but as he has shown on
numerous occasions, Sinner stood strong in critical moments and maintained
equality until the tie-break. A single mini-break was enough for Sinner to take
the first set 7-6(4) against a surprising Raonic who displayed his best
repertoire.
In the
second set, both players managed to hold one service game each, and after
Raonic won his game to level at 1-1, he decided to retire from the match,
paving the way for Sinner to reach the semifinals.
Sinner's
opponent will be Tallon Griekspoor, whom he precisely defeated in the
semifinals of the 2023 Rotterdam Open (7-5, 7-6). The Dutch player comes in
great form with victories over Lorenzo Musetti, Hubert Hurkacz (4th seed), and
Emil Ruusuvuori.
