Holger Rune is moving closer to a competitive return after suffering a severe Achilles tendon injury in October, which sidelined him following the semifinals of the Stockholm Open. The Danish player has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation in Qatar, monitored closely by his team. According to TV2 expert Peter Bastiansen, Rune’s return is now in sight, although no official date has been confirmed.
Bastiansen, speaking on the
Dobbeltfejl show, highlighted positive signs in Rune’s recovery. He noted that Rune has begun testing aspects of elite tennis once again, attending the ATP-500 tournament in Doha and observing matches from the sidelines.
Bastiansen described the process as encouraging: “It is extremely positive that Holger is starting to stand out in tournaments,” the tennis expert said. “He was
at the Doha tournament and, of course, is also rehabilitating in Qatar. Now he is getting out and feeling the energy that comes with being an experienced ATP player.”
Despite media speculation suggesting that his recovery window could even keep him out for the rest of 2026, Bastiansen believes Rune could return in time for Roland Garros. The French Open begins on May 24, and plans reportedly include participation in two lead-up tournaments, possibly the Masters 1000 events in Madrid or Rome. Bastiansen called this schedule a “ray of light,” reflecting cautious optimism in Rune’s camp.
Rune’s mother and manager, Aneke Rune, has reiterated that a firm date cannot yet be set. Progress is evaluated weekly, with physical assessments determining when Rune can move into the transition phase. “We cannot set a date at will. It depends entirely on his progress week by week with the physical exam,” she stated to
Spilxperten. “We need one more physical block and then enter the transition phase, and we cannot know exactly when it starts or how long it will last. We are closer than a month ago; that is probably the only thing I can say for certain.”
Positive signs in rehabilitation and competitive exposure
Rune’s rehabilitation has been closely tracked by his support team, and exposure to competitive environments is considered essential for regaining match readiness. Bastiansen emphasized the psychological and physical benefits of re-engaging with the ATP Tour, even in a non-playing capacity. Being present in Doha allowed the former world No. 4 to regain familiarity with tournament routines and court conditions while continuing recovery.
The Danish expert also praised Rune’s dedication and work ethic. He highlighted Rune’s proactive approach to training and recovery, noting that the player remains committed to returning at full strength. “It seems that the rehabilitation is going as it should. The goal is to be at Roland Garros, which I still think is crazy,” Bastiansen said, adding that Rune’s energy and focus on tennis are positive indicators for a competitive comeback.
Planning a return: Pre-French Open strategy
The tentative plan for Rune involves two tournaments leading into Roland Garros. The timeline suggests a potential return at the Madrid Masters in late April or the Rome Masters in early May, offering a short period of match practice before the French Open begins. Bastiansen stressed that these events serve as preparatory stages, allowing Rune to test his fitness under competitive conditions without overexertion.
While uncertainty remains, the expert community is closely monitoring the Danish star. Rune’s comeback trajectory will hinge on incremental progress in rehabilitation, with careful management to prevent setbacks. Bastiansen concluded on a measured note, highlighting the cautious optimism shared by the camp: “When you know Holger and all the energy he puts in, it is positive that he is getting back closer to tennis. I know he plans to play in these two preliminary tournaments ahead of Roland Garros, and I think that is a ray of light.”
