Spain’s young sensation
Carlos Alcaraz still has an
opportunity to dethrone Serbia’s Novak Djokovic from the number-one spot in the
ATP ranking before the year-end.
The 20-year-old is often regarded as the most highly-rated youngster
currently playing in the men’s singles category alongside Italy’s Jannik
Sinner and America’s Ben Shelton.
Alcaraz is currently 500 points behind the world number one
Djokovic and was hoping to reduce the difference in the ongoing
Paris Masters.
However, he suffered a shocking defeat against Russia’s Roman
Safiullin in the round of 32 in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
That defeat allows Djokovic to extend his lead
in the ATP Live Race to Turin to 1,495 points if he manages to win the title in
the French capital.
Despite that, Alcaraz will still have an opportunity to
dethrone the 24-time Grand Slam winner from the helm.
Currently, the two-time Grand Slam winner is not playing until
the
ATP Finals in Turin which means that he is opting to stay out of the next two
ATP 250 events.
However, he still has a chance to accept a wildcard entry to
any of those competitions and reduce the point difference.
Also, a title win in Turing will give Alcaraz 1,500
points which will be enough to take the top spot from Djokovic before the end
of the year.
