Polish tennis player
Hubert Hurkacz has revealed that he has
undergone surgery but is still optimistic about participating in the Paris
Olympics. The mega-event will be organised from July 26 to August 09 in the capital
city of France, where thousands of athletes will participate in different sports
to claim glory for their respective countries.
Hurkacz was recently quoted in a report as saying that he is ‘feeling better’ after undergoing a knee procedure. He suffered the injury during Wimbledon when he was forced to retire from the second-round contest against France’s Arthur Fils. The Wrocław-born also stated that, like every athlete, it is his ‘dream’ to represent his country at the Olympics.
“I had a knee procedure this Monday, but I’m feeling better
already and my team and are dedicating extensive time each day to the rehab
process,” he wrote in a post on the social media. “It’s a dream for every
athlete to represent their country at the Olympics, and I want to make sure I
am fully fit and ready before making the final decision to step on court. The
aim is not only to participate, but to win a medal for my country.”
Hurkacz played in the 2020 Olympics, and his journey was
very short. In the singles category, he was knocked out after losing in the
second round to Britain’s Liam Broady with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. In the doubles
category, he and his partner Łukasz Kubot lost in the first round to the
pair of Jan-Lennard Struff and Alexander Zverev with a score of 6-2, 7-6.
Hurkacz
has gone through a mixed season. His best performance came during the Estoril
Open, where he lifted the title after beating Spain’s Pedro Martinez in the
final with a score of 6-3, 6-4. He also played in the final of the Halle Open, where he lost to the current world number one Italy’s Jannik Sinner in straight
sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6.
