"I am confident he will win another Grand Slam" says Alex Corretja on Rafael Nadal

Despite being worried for his overall health former pro Alex Corretja believes Nadal will win another grand slam.

Rafael Nadal is set to miss his 2nd consecutive grand slam this week after ongoing foot issues. The Spaniard has been dealing with this particular foot injury since 2005 as it was revealed by his uncle Toni Nadal. However it really started bothering him during the French Open and effectively derailed his season since then. The Spaniard first elected to miss Wimbledon before being forced to call time on the 2021 season altogether.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca Corretja said:

“I understand that you miss the season because you want to find solutions to the problem you have. What worries me is that when he has to come back from a break and is getting older. When you have been without a player for so many months, other problems come to you or the same problems come back to you, as happened to [Roger] Federer. You lose a lot of competition rhythm and that does worry me."

Nadal will only return to tennis next year which should be at the Australian Open where the Spanish player triumphed only once (2009). Despite being shaky upon his return to North America Corretja believes Nadal will be back strong:

“It is true that recently it has shown that with little and long ago. It is not like before that it took many games to feel the ball. It has me unsettled to see how he will be after so many months without competing, but he is optimistic."

Corretja summarised his thoughts by saying that he believes Nadal will once again win the big one:

“I know, from his surroundings, that he is eager and that this is not over. Rafa’s career is not over and I am confident that he will win another Grand Slam.”
