"I apologize for the nonsense" says Fognini after using a homophobic slur during Olympics match

Fabio Fognini apologized for a remark made towards himself in his Olympic Games match vs Daniil Medvedev.

After missing a return during his match vs Daniil Medvedev Fognini used a homophobic slur towards himself. While Fognini is known as a player who talks to himself a lot during matches it's not often you hear him use obscenities. Such was the case in his match vs Medvedev where he called himself a 'frocio' which is a common homophobic slur used in Italy to describe an effeminate man.

Fabio Fognini posted an apology to his official Instagram where he explained:

“The heat went to my head! In today's match, I used a really stupid expression towards myself. Obviously, I didn't want to offend anyone's sensibilities. I love the LGBT community and I apologize for the nonsense that came out of me.”

So far there hasn't been news about fines or anything else but it is expected one should come. There is clear and audible evidence of Fognini making the remark which you can see in the Twitter thread of tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg.
