Britain’s tennis star
Jack Draper has supported
Katie Boulter’s
stance about the absence of former world number one
Andy Murray. The
37-year-old is often regarded as one of the greatest British players in the
history of men’s tennis in the singles category.
Murray has recently retired from professional tennis after
the Paris Olympics. He participated in the doubles category, where he and his partner
Dan Evans lost in the quarterfinal to America’s pair of Tommy Paul and Taylor
Fritz. Murray was once again in the news after an interesting response from Britain’s
young star,
Emma Raducanu.
The one-time Grand Slam winner, who is currently in New York
to participate in the fourth and the final Grand Slam of the year — the US Open
— was asked during a press talk about how she feels about tennis in the post-Murray
era. She responded by saying that she feels nothing different and that the
sports ‘moves on’ after the retirement of any player.
Those comments did not go down well with other British who hit
back at Raducanu. The first of them was Boulter and now Draper has also joined her
in paying tribute to the three-time Grand Slam winner. The 22-year-old highlighted
the void that is being created by the absence of Murray and stated the things that
he miss the most about the Glasgow-born star.
“It seems a bit weird not having Andy there with his rancid,
stinking shoes next to me in the locker room,” he said . “Andy's shoes would
always be drying out next to me with his wedding ring on them I’ve been next to
him in the locker room and you'd have his shoes, his wet grips – ‘Give me some
space to sit down!’ But I do miss his presence a lot. I feel a responsibility
to really play good tennis and be the British No 1. We miss Andy but things have
to come to an end and hopefully I can keep on going and the other players as
well.
