Daniil Medvedev opened up his quest to retain his Shanghai Masters title albeit one he won in 2019 by seeing off Cristian Garin today 6-3, 6-3.
But there were interesting circumstances in his win that Medvedev lamented, with the court speed changing he admitted since they were last there pre Covid.
The second seed who will now face Astana Open finalist, Sebastian Korda had scathing criticism saying that he doesn't know what is slower Shanghai or Indian Wells as well as saying it used to be one of the fastest on tour.
But he later admitted that he still had success on slower courts earlier in the season, so he will now adapt.
"To go back-to-back tournaments so fast, different balls, different surface so that's very tricky," said Medvedev.
"Before was one of probably the fastest on tour. Now I don't know what's slower here or Indian Wells. So yeah it is what it is. Have to play like this, I managed even on slow hard courts this season to play well so that's what I'm going to try to do."
