Nick Kyrgios has once again hit back at his critics explaining that he is comfortable with the person he is and not worried about people's perception of him.
Nick Kyrgios is an acquired taste and while quite popular among many fans there is a certain number of those that don't really like it. He is a character that has rarely been seen in tennis and purists of the sport have issues with some of the antics he brings to the sport of tennis. One thing is for sure, Kyrgios has always been himself and he reiterated it once more during a recent interview:
"I have always been myself. To be honest, I look at myself in the mirror every day and I know I’m comfortable in my own skin. It took a long time to look myself in the mirror and thought, ‘I don’t really care if I win a Grand Slam. I don’t want to be like Roger Federer.’
Kyrgios further explained:
“I don’t care how I’m perceived because the people around me know I’m a caring person. I’m always myself. I’m confident and I try and help people. I’ve always been myself. I’ve always been like this since I was a young kid. I have always been emotional and theatrical at times on the court. I’m comfortable in my own skin.”
He finished off by explaining what he would like to remember as:
“I want to be remembered as more than just someone who played [tennis]. I want to be remembered as an icon — someone who just went out there and did it their own way. You have got Nadals and Djokovic and Federers, I want kids to be like, ‘If that guy can do it then maybe we can do it as well.”
