French tennis star
Gael Monfils has hinted at taking
retirement from the sport next year.
The 36-year-old is being termed by many as one of the most
underachieved French men’s players in the recent past.
As the year goes by, Monfils performances has not been great and
it is being admitted by the player himself who has now hinted that retirement is not that far away.
“I feel Elina will play much longer than me,” he said. “It
might be one of my last tournaments in the states. Maybe next year. We don’t
know. But soon. But I may come back to support Elina with the baby. So you’ll
see me around.”
Despite having amazing potential and a powerful forehand, Monfils
does not have a great record while playing at the Grand Slams where he never
managed to play in the final of any of the big events.
His best performance was reaching the semifinal of the two
Grand Slams. First of that came in the French Open 2008 when he was knocked out
in the semifinal after losing to former world number one Switzerland’s Roger
Federer with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
The other one was playing in the semifinal of the US Open in
2016 where he was defeated by current world number two and 23-time Grand Slam
winner Serbia’s Novak Djokovic with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
