John McEnroe once again sparked controversy among fans by describing Matteo Arnaldi as an unknown during the match with Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open.
The former World No. 1 has faced various criticisms from fans in recent months, similar to his career. During Wimbledon, criticisms resurfaced due to the salary differences between him and Martina Navratilova in their broadcasting roles.
In the same tournament, John McEnroe commented on the match between the 25th seed, Nicolas Jarry, and Carlos Alcaraz, stating that Jarry was still an unknown. This led to criticisms, including from Australian tennis player John Millman, who expressed his discontent with McEnroe's commentary on Twitter.
A similar situation occurred this time with the young Italian Matteo Arnaldi, currently ranked as the World No. 61, who will enter the top 50 for the first time in his career starting next Monday. The 7-time Grand Slam champion commented that Arnaldi is "a complete unknown," which triggered criticism from fans:
"Does he never get any feedback from the people who keep hiring him to comment??? or from the people in the booth with him? i get that he’s arrogant but i wonder if anyone bothers to tell him to do better," a fan posted.
"Please can we have Chris Eubanks back? I can’t bear to listen to McEnroe for the rest of the week. Sigh. It was so nice to be spared his inanities for a few days," the fan posted.

"One game into the Alcaraz vs. Arnaldi #USOpen fourth round, and John McEnroe has already called #61 Matteo Arnaldi "totally unknown."
"This is a problem in a lot of sports commentating but especially in tennis. It’s not cute when a professional, highly-paid “tennis analyst” doesn’t know who a top 100 player is and doesn’t make any effort to find out. What are we paying you for?
