Alexander Zverev spoke ahead of the Open Sud de France in Montpellier and the German admitted that he dealt with a lot of pressure.
Zverev arrived in Melbourne as a dark horse candidate to win the event as he technically had a chance to even become number one in the world if things happened a certain way. The German disappointed not only himself but many of his fans and pundits with very poor play and a shocking result crashing out early. Speaking on that ahead of his return in Montepellier he said:
I had a bad Australian Open. I had a lot of pressure in Australia, everyone kept telling me that I could become world number one by performing there, and I was disappointed with my result.”
Asked whether he watched the final Zverev admitted he did and on the extraordinary match he said:
“I watched the end of the final, even though I would have liked to be at the Rod Laver Arena in the moment. Rafa was incredible, extraordinary. We must also congratulate Daniil, who was also extraordinary.”
