Andy Murray has always been a patriotic Scot and with Scotland preparing to play England at the 2020 EURO Murray hopes for a solid result.
Andy Murray made a winning return at Queen's Club yesterday defeating Paire 6-3 6-2. A very emotional Murray spoke about how much the win and match, in general, meant to him as it was his first match on grass in over three years. One day later Murray spoke about lighter topics with Scotland getting ready to play England at the EURO's.
Murray famously said in 2006 he would support anyone who played England which was a sarcastic comment made towards a nagging journalist. Since then Murray has often been reminded of it and he was once again asked about football. He said:
“I will probably be in a bubble so I will watch it with my team who are all English. I hope Scotland doesn’t lose badly, that would be tough.”
Murray is a big football fan and even played the sport as a youngster but ultimately decided to pursue a career in tennis. He had chosen football he might have played for Scotland. Asked about the decision to stick with tennis he explained:
“I had to make a decision. I was 14 at the time, ‘What do I do, do I go for tennis or football? The next week I went for a tennis session and my dad picked me up after 40 minutes, which is short for a tennis session because I had to go to the football session straight afterwards and on the way, in the car, I said to him, ‘Dad, I want to stay and do tennis’."
Murray concluded by saying:
“That was it, never went back to football training again.”
