Leylah Fernandez gave Canada the decisive point in their Billie Jean King Cup tie against Serbia and after the match, she spoke to reporters.
It was a very close affair in the Billie Jean King Cup when Canada took on Serbia. The decisive point came from Fernandez who came back against Stojanovic 3-6 6-3 6-4. The 18-year old Fernandez held her composure in key moments securing a great comeback win.
Speaking on that she said:
"I love the pressure and atmosphere in the Billie Jean King Cup but hopefully next time it's going to be a bit easier. I tried to stay tough mentally and take my opportunities when they came. I am proud to play for my country."
The win propelled Canada into the competitions upper tiers which gave Fernandez another success after her maiden title in Monterrey last month. Asked how she felt, she remained humble and said:
"I have no idea how I feel but it was a team effort. I tried to stay positive and this is something to remember."
It was the 2nd win for Fernandez who defeated Danilovic on the first day as well. Ultimately Canada went on to win with a total score of 4-0 in large part thanks to the performance of Fernandez.
The young Canadian is enjoying a very good 2021 and she will look to build upon that as the season turns to clay.
