Alexander Zverev faced an uphill battle after losing the first set against Croat Borna Coric, but the German found a way to escape with the victory.

The fifth seed prevailed after a near three and a half hour encounter on Arthur Ashe stadium, but the match could easily have gone in Coric's favor. Although Zverev emerged with a 1-6 7-6(6) 7-6(1) 6-3 victory, this was the first time he had won a tiebreak against Coric out of four attempts. The World No.7 revealed that his ability to maintain his poise during the tiebreak enabled him to finally end his losing streak.
"I just started playing maybe a little bit more aggressive because if I would have played the way I played, that's not the level for a quarter-final match of a Grand Slam," Zverev said. "I had to start playing better and I was a little bit more consistent then as well. My serve got better and I thought to myself, 'I'm down 6-1, 4-2, I have nothing to lose.'"
Although Coric lead by a set and a break, he faltered and was unable to clinch the second set. Zverev employed the strategy of playing from behind the baseline, and limited his errors. This resulted in Coric being unable to get the best of him during rallies, a feat that led to the German's victory.
"At some point I told myself, 'Look, if you keep playing like this, you're going to be down two sets to love in a blink,'" Zverev said. "I needed to be more aggressive, needed to go into the rallies and be more stable as well. At the end of the day, this is what I did and this is why it worked out for me."
