"I played well" - Goffin finds form in Davis Cup, lifts Belgium past Finland

David Goffin finally return to some form and it came in the Davis Cup where he lifted his Belgium past Finland.

An away tie against Finland was a tough task for the Belgian team that travelled with a strong squad albeit in shaky form. David Goffin as the best player has been struggling immensely since returning from a knee injury and it was only here that he was able to score some impressive wins. Those victories proved crucial in the 3-2 victory.

Goffin defeated Ruusuvuori 6-4 6-2 to force the decider and it was Zizou Bergs that delivered against Virtanen 6-4 6-0. It was a relief for Goffin who desperately needed some big wins that would give him confidence. Following the win he said:

"It was a very good match from the start. It was the first time in my career that I’ve played a singles match after a doubles match. It was not easy to refocus, especially against a very good player, but I was feeling great. I played better and better and I finished well”.

His teammate Bergs added:

"I’ve been dreaming of Davis Cup ever since I’m young when I saw the guys playing on TV. This is why I play tennis, this is what I want to do. So a lot of fear came with this match. The week before I was nervous because I knew this could happen, that I would have to play the tie at 2-2. I’m super happy that I handled it very well”.
