Greek tennis star
Stefanos Tsitsipas spoke on his desire to emulate former World No.1
Carlos Alcaraz, after observing the Spaniard at the 2024
Laver Cup.
Both men were members of Team Europe at the annual event, with Team Europe battling past Team World to reclaim the trophy after two straight losses to their rivals. Alcaraz played a significant role in Team Europe's victory, as the 21-year old powered past Ben Shelton on Saturday before brining home the trophy for Team Europe with a decisive victory over Taylor Fritz on Sunday.
Watching Alcaraz up close was a surreal experience, says Tsitsipas
The World No.12 had the opportunity to observe Alcaraz from a different perspective, as he cheered his teammate on from the bench. Tsitsipas would later state he learned a lot from this vantage point, and admitted to being greatly impressed his the Wimbledon champion's showmanship and playing style.
"I'm observing Carlos, it's like, seeing him from that angle is so different to just watching him on TV or any other type of competition - I don't really get to get so close and intimate with another high-tier player as him," said Tsitsipas. "He's currently one of the best players in the world, won two Grand Slam titles this year, and for me he's an example. I really want to follow in his footsteps.
"To get to see him play live and to see what kind of patterns and what kind of behaviors and what kind of body language he shows on court is definitely something that I try and copy and try to bring into my own game."
