Bernard Tomic seems to be planning a comeback to the top of the tennis rankings, as the Australian seems fired up and claims to be ramping up his training.
Once considered a potential top star, Tomic shocked the tennis community when he won the Australian Open Boys’ singles title at the age of 15 in 2008 and the US Open Boys' title the following year.
The Aussie would go on to win three ATP Tour titles, and rise to World No.17 on the rankings in 2016. However, he suffered a rapid decline and, although he won another title in 2018, he never really reached the heights that were expected.
After dropping to outside the Top 200 in the ATP rankings, the 29-year old has his sights set on a comeback, with the belief that he can return to the top of the game.
“I have a goal. For sure one is to get top 10," revealed Tomic in an interview with Courier Mail. "When I got to 17 in the world, I was a couple of points away from finishing 12. That was really at 60 per cent effort.
“I reckon I can get into top 10. One of my goals is to finish it off right. I reckon it can be done in two or three years.”
Furthermore, Tomic posted a video on Instagram in which he reveals how the hateful comments over the years are fueling his comeback.
“In the past I used to let it get to me and react out of stupidity. But now I’m using it as fuel," said Tomic. “I’m back. I am … I’m hungry, and I’m ready. No one can stop me now, but me.
“I’m training, I’m sweating, I’m pushing, I’m fired up. Whatever it takes to get back on top. Hard work pays off. I’ve put my blood sweat and tears into this sport.
“I have come back before. It’s time to set the record straight.”
