Alexander Zverev got past the second round of the Indian Wells Open with a commanding victory over Matteo Berrettini. After the match, he was sent a curveball of a question directing towards Emma Raducanu's coaching situation.
The British number one is on the hunt for a 10th coach after splitting with Francisco Roig. The duo were together for six months and looked to be working well together, but that did not seem to be the case with Raducanu's vision on how she wanted to play did not match Roig's. That is why the Spaniard ended their partnership and why Raducanu is at Indian Wells without a coach.
She has had the company of hitting partner Alexis Canter stepping into that role on a temporary basis with her former righthand man Mark Petchey juggling broadcasting duties with coaching the 23-year-old in training sessions. Already it has been a positive start to the Sunshine swing for Raducanu who dispatched Anastasia Zakharova with ease. She will come up against two-time Grand Slam champion Amanda Anisimova in the third round as she looks to continue her progress without any coach guiding her.

Zverev weighs in on Raducanu coaching situation

Many tennis personnel have been following Raducanu's career from a distance, seeing where the former US Open champion would end up. A large part of her tennis career to date has been dominated by the coaching debacle.
Zverev has had a number of coaches in his time, including his father who is currently in the hot seat. The likes of Juan Carlos Ferrero, Ivan Lendl and David Ferrer have taken up the job.
Many people have questioned whether Raducanu could go into the future without a coach. This was something the world number four was not so sure about with him showcasing huge differences between their views on coaching.
"I think Emma is a very special case. I love her, I really do, but I think Emma and coaching is quite a big difference between me and coaching," he stated in his press conference.
"I have been with the same coach for 28 years, so yeah, it's a bit of a different question, different subject with her specifically."

He referenced Petchey while not wanting to impede on what is a huge decision. "I mean, she has a coach here, right, with Mark Petchey. It's up to her. I mean, I don't know. I have the same people around that I like to work with, so that's just me."
Zverev started the year on good form with a very solid showing at the Australian Open. He reached the semi-final before losing out to Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller. He then lost early in the Mexican Open, showing signs of inconsistency. He will hope to climb back up the rankings and show his worth at the top of the sport but will need to continue playing at the level he produced in Melbourne. He took on Berrettini to open his account in California, getting a single break in each set to see off the former Wimbledon finalist.
He will face off against Brandon Nakashima in the third round. Five times he has clashed against the American, and five times he has won. A sixth and Zverev will reach a fourth last-16 at Indian Wells.
