Ben Shelton’s dad shared his thoughts on Novak Djokovic copying his son’s signature celebration after beating him in the US Open semis.
Rising tennis star Ben Shelton almost saw his Cinderella run reach an epic conclusion as he reached the US Open semifinals, but fell in straight sets to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
The 20-year old became the youngest American male player to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 30 years, with his incredible run seeing him break into the Top 20 as he currently sits at World No.19 on the ATP rankings.
Although Shelton lost the match in straight sets, he was extremely close to taking the third set from the World No.1. In an interview with GQ, Shelton gave some insight into his thoughts during that crucial set.
"Okay, I may not win this match," recalled Shelton. "But I want this guy to know—I want the crowd to know—that I’m here to play. And that I’m going to be back.”
There was some controversy at the end of their clash, as Djokovic imitated Shelton's signature "phone call" celebration after winning the match.
