Juan Martin Del Potro is serious about taking part in the 2023 US Open in hopes to get a proper send-off from tennis with one final grand slam appearance.
Del Potro hasn't been spending much time on a tennis court but he's kept busy with all sorts of engagements. The Argentine was in New York last year at the invitation from the event which promised him a wild card if he was to return in 2023. He retired earlier that year but is now planning to attempt to play at the grand slam for one final time.
He confirmed it now publicly:
"My goal is to be ready to play an official match in the tournament. I don´t know if I will be 100% or not but, at least, if my last tennis match ever has to be this year, I want (it to be) ... at the U.S. Open. I will work hard for the last time, maybe, in my career, and then you never know. God will decide if I´m ready or not."
Tournament director said on his potential comeback:
"Juan Martín is a true favorite of U.S. Open fans. He is a tremendous, yet gracious, competitor and we would be thrilled for this former U.S. Open champion to join us at this year´s tournament."
