Carlos Alcaraz will not play at the Monte-Carlo Masters between April 9 - April 16, 2023 as he joins Rafael Nadal who shortly before withdrew from the traditional clay court opener.
Alcaraz will not now battle with Novak Djokovic for the World Number One spot in Monaco and clears the path for the Serbian to headline his return to action.
"After two months abroad, I am happy to return home but sad because I finished my last match in Miami with physical discomfort. After visiting my doctor Dr Juanjo Lopez in Murcia today and being evaluated, I will not be able to go to Monte Carlo to start the clay court tour," he said on Twitter.
"I have post-traumatic arthritis in my left hand and muscular discomfort in the spine that needs rest to prepare for everything that is to come. See you in 2024 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters."
This is concerning for Alcaraz as it spells another end to a run of tournaments due to injury with the Spaniard spending time on the sidelines after the Paris Masters followed by a run of clay court titles on his return only to be halted post Rio and not playing Acapulco.
It is the fifth big tournament he misses as a result in the last six months.
