Rafael Nadal lost to Frances Tiafoe at the
US Open being unable to match the level of the American in the match.
Tiafoe played one of the best matches of his career, if not the best in front of a packed Ashe who had his back against Nadal. The Spaniard had his moments in the match but as he explained after the match, he simply could not hold a high level for a long time:
"I was not able to hold a high level of tennis for a long time.I was not able to create the damage that normally I used to do.”
He continued:
"We can't find excuses. At the end the only thing that happened is we went to the fourth round of the US Open and I faced a player that was better than me. And that's why I am having a plane back home.”
The Spaniard had a big chance to secure number one in the rankings here but that's now in question as Ruud and Alcaraz could do it instead.
