Matteo Berrettini played very strong tennis in Gstaad to reach the final where he was the better player than Ruud for a good part of the match.
The Norwegian was able to overturn the match and Berrettini revealed the sudden drop in the final set is due to physical issues he suffered at the beginning of the week. Berrettini did not reveal what the problem was but he added 'as always' as a descriptor which got some fans wondering whether Berrettini is carrying a chronic injury.
During the trophy ceremony, Matteo said:
“It’s really tough, you don’t see what is behind the scenes. At the beginning of the week, I was struggling with my body, as always. So I wasn’t sure that I could play the tournament but here I am holding the [runner-up] trophy so I’m really glad for the job that we’re doing.”
He was supposed to play in Kitzbuhel this week but pulled out together with Gstaad champion Casper Ruud. The Italian will probably return somewhere in North America.
