With the era of the Big Three soon coming to an end, many have looked at
Daniil Medvedev,
Alexander Zverev and
Stefanos Tsitsipas as the leaders of the next generation in tennis. However, World No.13
Denis Shapovalov doesn't believe that the aforementioned players play better than him.
Medvedev recently won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, while both Tsitsipas and Zverev have reached a Grand Slam final. Furthermore, each man has won at least one ATP Masters 1000 title. Conversely, Shapovalov reached his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon this year, and has only one career title to his name, the 2019
St. Petersburg Open trophy.
However, when asked if the trio had taken the lead for the new generation, the Canadian had an interesting response.
"I disagree with that," said Shapovalov. "I think everyone has their own way. Don't forget that I played in the semifinals at Wimbledon this year, and I think this is a great achievement, a big step.
"Perhaps they have more consistent results, but I would not say that they play better than me, even if you watch our head-to-head it's pretty close. It seems to me that everyone goes their own way. Maybe one year they play better, the next year I will play better. This is how I see it."
