"Tireless" is a word that could be used to describe Sloane Stephens, who has had a strenuous season full of ups and downs but still somehow finds the energy to keep going.
The American has competed in 17 tournaments this season, including all four Grand Slams. Furthermore, she collaborated with fashion house Solid & Striped to design a swimwear collection, in addition to running the Sloane Stephens Foundation.
Despite having a full schedule, Stephens tries to make room for downtime during which she attends her physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In an interview with Vogue, the 28-year old opened up about this important aspect of her life.
"At one point or another, we have all kept going when what we needed to do most was rest,” said Stephens. "Rest shouldn't be a radical practice. It should be something that is encouraged. Although I’m a pro athlete, I’m not training 24/7. Active rest and therapy for the body and mind is as important as active intensity no matter what your career.
"I very much believe in the power of a vibe check, and if something doesn’t feel quite right I’ve grown to where I take that pause and re-allocate my energy. I’ve learned to prioritize my wellness and my emotions. Saying “no” does not mean you are difficult or unwilling to do something, it shows the world that you respect your time, yourself, and your boundaries."
The 2017 US Open champion also opened up about handling her emotions, and advocated for more people to see therapists to ensure their mental well-being.
I am such a proponent of people going to therapy and having that safe space to talk through things," revealed Stephens. "People should be applauded for going to therapy and it’s something I talk about openly with my friends. If you don’t connect with the first therapist you go to, try another one until you find the right fit for you."
