Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios hinted that it could be his final time competing at Wimbledon following his opening round defeat alongside Alexander Bublik. They would be knocked out against the sixth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic 6-3, 6-4.
Kyrgios and Bublik had participated before together, going back as far as 2022 in Stuttgart just before he reached the final of Wimbledon, losing against Novak Djokovic. Four years later, they once more teamed up on court, winning their opening match in Stuttgart before injury forced Kyrgios to pull out of the event.
This created a huge amount of doubt surrounding his participation at Wimbledon. He has been continually sidelined due to various injuries picked up and has not been able to make a full return to the ATP Tour despite numerous attempts.
He was fit enough to make the trip to South London following him being rewarded a wildcard for the doubles alongside Bublik. The flamboyant duo looked to put on a show for the crowd but could not unlock their ultimate potential as they fell in a straight sets defeat on Court 17.

Possibly the end of Kyrgios at Wimbledon

Kyrgios was sombre after the match, believing that could be it for his participation at Wimbledon. "I would probably say pretty confidently my last Wimbledon," he stated. "I was looking around and taking everything in. It was tough. It would be hard to see myself coming back here again and competing."
He admitted that while the run in 2022 was the best moment in his prosperous tennis career, he will never get to those levels again. "That final was always going to be one of the better memories of my tennis career, but I just can't see myself getting back to anywhere near that level."
The reason for this downfall is due to his persistent injury problems. Whether it is a reoccurring wrist or knee injury, this has ravaged the ability of the Aussie on court and left him a shell of what he was. He did not openly state that retirement was on the cards, but he looked to be acknowledging that the injury troubles had taken its toll.
"I've just got so many thoughts right now," he continued. "You go from making finals of Grand Slams to struggling to play multiple singles matches."

Finally, he was thankful for the Wimbledon organisers offering him a wildcard while being grateful for Bublik to have the opportunity to compete with him again. "The wild cards are a very heavy, unreliant thing to plan schedules on," he said. "So I'm obviously super grateful for that opportunity. Going out with someone like Bublik who keeps it pretty lighthearted, it's a lot of fun. But at the same time, a lot of things were running through my head the last couple of games."
It is unclear what Kyrgios' next steps are. Ranked 892nd in the ATP Live Rankings, he will need to rely on wildcards to get into other ATP tournaments throughout the rest of the year. He may switch his attention to the North American hardcourt swing where the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open lead directly into the US Open at the end of August.
Similar to the end of 2025, he may decide to keep himself fit and healthy and aim for a return in a number of exhibitions. This was used tactically to build up his match sharpness and fitness ready for a return to his native Australia at the start of the year, but again he was not able to reach the heights expected of him on court. Time will tell if these are some of the final times tennis fans will see Kyrgios on a tennis court, and quite possibly the final time at Wimbledon.
