Tennis fans
engaged in a discussion on social media about whether an active player could
achieve the feat of the Calendar Slam, considering that neither
Roger Federer,
Rafael Nadal, nor
Novak Djokovic were able to accomplish it.
This
implies winning all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year, a feat
achieved in men's tennis only by Rod Laver in 1969, while on the women's side,
legends Margaret Court (1970) and, most recently, Steffi Graf (1988) managed
it. Graf is the only one among them to have also won the Olympic gold medal,
which is referred to as the Golden Slam.
In 2021,
Djokovic came very close to achieving it by winning the Australian Open, French
Open, and Wimbledon, but he fell short in the final of the US Open against
Daniil Medvedev. 'Nole also had his chance in 2011 and 2015, falling just short
at Roland Garros.
Federer
faced a similar situation, as in 2004, 2006, and 2007, he only missed out on
winning the French Open. In Nadal's case, he won three Slams in 2010, falling
short only at the Australian Open.
The
discussion about the Calendar Slam began on Reddit, with a fan posting,
"Do you think that we will see this extremely rare feat being achieved in
our lifetime?"
The consensus
among fans revolved around none of the Big-3 achieving it, and Serena Williams
was even mentioned, so the possibility is practically nil. "If Novak,
Roger, and Rafa couldn’t manage it, I don’t see anyone managing it in the
future," one fan replied.
"By
the time you're older, its sooo much pressure, that it really is too much.
Novak and Serena are great examples."
Some fan
responses included the difficulty of surface changes, particularly from clay at
the French Open to grass at Wimbledon in just 3 weeks: "The French Open
-> Wimbledon duo is really, really hard., another added."
