Former Australian Open finalist John Lloyd is unsettled about Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner dominance on the ATP Circuit, especially in the Grand Slam events where he struggles to find any competition for them.
The duo have risen leaps and bounds above the rest of the field, separating themselves in the rankings from everyone else. A crater lies between the chasing pack and the big two, with results at the big events portraying a concerning picture for anyone else who wants to follow in suit.
Their results in Grand Slams have been very eye-catching. The last player not to be called Alcaraz or Sinner to win a Grand Slam was Novak Djokovic in the 2023 US Open. Since then, only two names have been engraved onto the resulting trophies. It began in 2024 when the Italian came back from a two-set deficit to defeat Daniil Medvedev and clinch the Australian Open - his first major title. He would not reach another Slam final until the US Open, where his hardcourt form was once again showcased at the highest level. In between those two triumphs, Alcaraz had enjoyed success of his own. He won his maiden Roland Garros title ahead of regaining his Wimbledon crown.
2025 started in similar fashion with Sinner overcoming Alexander Zverev to lift the trophy in Melbourne once more. He possibly should have had another major title at the French Open. He spurned a two-set lead and three match points as he was crushed by a rejuvenated Alcaraz in a mesmerising match. That was the first of three Grand Slam finals matchups on the bounce. Sinner extracted his revenge at Wimbledon while his hardcourt form was delivered a huge dent after the Spaniard won his second US Open title. They have also met in the final of two Masters 1000 events and the ATP Finals in Turin.

Lloyd sheds concern over Sinner-Alcaraz Grand Slam dominance

This authority the duo possess over the ATP Tour has got Lloyd worried. He specifically highlighted the anti-climactic situation if one of Sinner or Alcaraz got injured, implying it would be a walk in the park to the title for the other one.
“I am a little bit concerned about next year,” Lloyd stated on the Inside-In Tennis Podcast. “You always think that someone is going to come through and challenge, but at the moment I look at Slams — because that is the bread and butter of our sport — and I look at it and think if one of them at one of the majors, which will happen at one stage, gets injured or gets a day where someone plays lights out."

The reason he brought this up was due to the huge disparity between them and the rest of the tennis players. “You are going to have such a weak half of the draw in terms of names. You almost feel like you might as well give it to the other one right away," Lloyd claimed. "At the Slams, you want it to be competitive all the way through, but these two have just separated themselves. It’s amazing to watch how great they are.”
The players will be lining up ready to take their chances at delivering a huge upset in the upcoming Australian Open. A fourth Alcaraz-Sinner Grand Slam final on the bounce has been foreshadowed by many fans and pundits, cementing once more the quality that they own. While Sinner looks to make it a hat-trick of Australian Open triumphs, Alcaraz is on the hunt for a Career Grand Slam. The event in Melbourne is the only one he has not tasted success in. The six-time Grand Slam champion is yet to even make a semi-final Down Under. He will be desperately hoping for his form to change as the world braces for another electric campaign between the two tennis stars.
