Iga Swiatek celebrated her one-year anniversary of winning the Roland Garros yesterday and after the match, she pledged a donation of 50.000 dollars for mental health.
Iga Swiatek dominated her opponent 6-1 6-0 to move at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. The victory came on the same day as her Roland Garros triumph which is now one year old. It also came on World Mental Health day and after the match, Swiatek announced that she would donate 50.000 dollars to mental health non-profit organizations.
She said:
"I would say in sports, for me it was always important to use that kind of help because I always thought that in my mental toughness there is some strength that I can use on court and I can also develop in that manner. But I also know everybody has different paths, and it's great that we can choose our path because I know that there are people who also don't need psychologists."
She further said:
"Basically, I'm not saying that, Hey, you should do that if you want to be the best because everybody has a different personality and everybody has different needs."
Swiatek has been travelling with a dedicated psychologist for the past 3 years and she credited that experience as a key component of her success. The decision to donate was inspired by Venus Williams who has been advocating about mental health for a long time now. Swiatek said:
“Venus Williams inspired me a lot b/c when I saw her statement and initiative, that was so great."
