Switzerland’s veteran tennis star
Stan Wawrinka has revealed
that fans support is what is keeping him going.
The 38-year-old is moving towards the end of his career and
has struggled to secure consistent results in the recent past.
Wawrinka was recently quoted in a report where he stated
that it is the fans' support which is keeping him going despite getting old.
“I'm approaching the end of my career, but I don't feel
old,” he said. “I get so much support at tournaments all over the world -
that's one of the reasons why I keep going. I hope it goes even further. I
don't know how long it will be.
“I had four incredible years with Grand Slam victories, a
victory at a Masters 1000. I beat the number one player three times in a Major
final, which is an incredible part of my career.
"One of my best experiences was also the Olympic victory in
2008 in doubles [with Federer]. Being in the Olympic village with the Swiss
delegation and then winning gold was a life experience.
As a young player, I didn't dare to dream about it. I
dreamed of becoming a professional player, i.e. playing in the top 100. Then I
could dream more step by step: Top 50, Top 20, Top 10."
The Lausanne-born is taking part in the Swiss Indoors where
he is set to face Alexander Shevchenko on Tuesday.
