It has been a challenging start to the season for Emma Raducanu. The British star has struggled to find consistencyin 2025 as she looks to return to Grand Slam-winning form.
Of course, there have been disruptions, including Nick Cavaday stepping back from his coaching role. After another early exit at the Abu Dhabi Open, Raducanu will hope to turn things around quickly.
As mentioned before, Raducanu's 2025 season has not gone as planned. She suffered early exits at the Australian Open and the Singapore Open, and Abu Dhabi proved to be another disappointment.
Raducanu put up a competitive fight against Markéta Vondroušová, but ultimately, she fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in a match lasting just over an hour and a half.
She made a strong start, securing an early break, but Vondroušová responded emphatically, winning five consecutive games to take the first set. The second set was tightly contested, but Raducanu was broken late, allowing Vondroušová to seal the victory.
After the match, Vondroušová shared her thoughts on the contest.
"It was a good match, I think, from both sides," Vondroušová said.
"We fought every game, so I'm very pleased and happy to be through. Emma is a great player, tough [draw] for the first round. I'm very happy to be back and playing."
Raducanu’s career is at a crossroads, with uncertainty surrounding her upcoming tournaments. She addressed this when speaking to The National.
"I have no idea. I'm going to take it week by week. See how I am, see how the body is and what kind of plan we put in place, I guess," Raducanu stated.
"But I'm not thinking too far ahead; I'm just trying to take it day by day in the current situations."
On Sky Sports Tennis, Laura Robson provided her perspective on Raducanu’s recent struggles.
"I love that she went to Singapore in the first place to get more matches in," Robson said.
"Obviously, that didn't go as well as she'd have hoped, but then to play the week after is exactly what she's been trying to do for the last year.
"It's a great decision, and hopefully, she'll be able to build on that – and by the time [WTA 1000 events] Indian Wells and Miami come around [in March], she's got a good base to work with.
"Even in Australia, you could tell she was on the right path and starting to play some good tennis, but just wasn't quite match sharp in the key moments."
Raducanu remains one of the most exciting talents in British tennis, and all eyes will be on whether she can find her rhythm again in 2025.
