A first Miami QF for Stef 👏 @steftsitsipas will play Hurkacz in the last eight after defeating Sonego 6-2, 7-6 at the #MiamiOpen.
It was another good display from Stefanos Tsitsipas who advanced to the Miami Open quarterfinals for the first time in his career.
Showcasing his good form that started in Acapulco the Greek was quick to dismiss Italian Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets. The Greek blasted 20 winners en route to the easy finish where he did not face a break point in 91 minutes of play. After the match he said:
“I’m playing well, feeling well, and enjoying these moments on the court. I’m thrilled to be playing the way I’m playing. I’m having a great impact with my game so far this week, so it’s important for me to capitalize [on] that."
Not allowing the Acapulco final to affect him negatively he embraces the challenges of playing tough matches day after day:
“Every single opponent has been a separate challenge, and I’ve been managing to find solutions against them. It’s important for me to have matches like this.”
The 2nd set was much tougher for Tssitsipas who faced stronger opposition from Sonego in it. After the match he said he expected it:
“I was expecting him to raise his level. When you’re one set to love, you feel like you have nothing to lose. He definitely improved, so he was a much more difficult opponent in the second set than he was in the first.”
He is set to face Hubert Hurkacz next who did extremely well to down Milos Raonic for a spot in the quarterfinal. The pole will be tough opposition as he is a part-time resident in Florida and does fairly well in the humid conditions. The Greek has a 6-1 H2H record against him with the last victory coming at the ATP Rotterdam not long ago.
