Alexander Zverev is having a great 2021 season especially lately having won the gold medal in Tokyo and the Cincinnati Masters.
The German always believed himself capable of winning a grand slam and he almost did it last year. Playing Dominic Thiem in the final he was up 2-0 only two points away from doing it before collapsing and losing in 5. He bounced back fairly well in 2021 winning several events including 2 Masters (Madrid and Cincinnati) as well as the Olympic Gold medal.
Reflecting on that he said:
“It has been a pretty incredible month for me. Obviously winning the gold medal is something that you don’t even dream about as a tennis player because it’s just so surreal in a way. It’s incredible. I mean, the feeling that gave me, and also the Cincinnati week has been pretty good. I feel well. I hope I continue this wave here in New York and we’ll see how it goes.”
Zverev has displayed a fabulous level of tennis in Tokyo and Cincinnati winning the events with fairly little trouble along the way. His confidence and level of tennis has been noted by several analysts including Boris Becker who said that something changed with Zverev.
Now the German is looking to the US Open determined to achieve on what he narrowly missed out on last year:
“I think in a way it fuelled gas into the fire a little bit because I was two points away from winning it. I practised on the centre court now a few times. There are still memories there. I still remember it, and I still have that in the back of my mind."
He further added:
“I’m very motivated. I’m very much looking forward to getting back on that court and starting to compete because I was not far away last year. I feel like I’m playing great tennis this year.”
