As he approaches the twilight of his career, Canadian tennis star
Milos Raonic has acknowledged the role played by his booming serve in helping him achieve success on the ATP Tour.
The former World No.3 has enjoyed a successful career, having won eight ATP singles titles and finished runner-up at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships. However, a slew of injuries hindered his career, as Raonic was forced to take time off in 2021 to deal with his ailments. Although he has made attempts to return to competitive tennis, his hiatus and lack of match play have seen his ranking fall to outside the top 400.
Raonic credits much of his career to his serve
In an appearance on Tennis Channel 2’s Second Serve, Raonic discussed a variety of topics. The 34-year old highlighted the importance of his serve, despite being referred to as a "servebot" by fans within the tennis community.
"I think some players don’t want to be called that, but I’m very well aware of what’s made a career for me," said Raonic. "My tennis story would be very different without my serve.
“It’s the only shot that you can really make a career of tennis from in this game. Nobody has made a career off just the forehand, or just volleys, or just the backhand. But the serve can have this incredible impact. And I think it’s a shame to not focus on it."
The highest-ranked Canadian in ATP history, Raonic revealed he hopes to return at 's-Hertogenbosch later this summer.
