John Isner and
Hubert Hurkacz have conquered the doubles field at the
Miami Open taking down Koolhof and Skupski in the final 7-6(5) 6-4.
A very unusual pairing made its doubles debut at the Miami Open as Hubert Hurkacz and John Isner decided to team up. Not only did they team up but they also played some superb tennis all week long to defeat some impressive doubles pairing en route to the trophy. In the final, they faced Koolhof and Skupski and they proved better.
It was a very entertaining double final with moments of brilliance by both. As expected serves dominated on both sides and there were not many chances for either pairing on return. The first set was very close with both pairs saving a couple of break points. It ended in a tiebreak where Hurkacz switched momentum to his team with a superb passing return.
At that point, Koolhof and Skupski were up a minibreak but after that, the American / Polish combination took over. They finished off the job with 7-5. In the 2nd set, things got a bit tricky for Isner and Hurkacz as they faced 15-40 early in the set. They held in superb fashion to keep themselves in the 2nd set and it proved crucial.
Koolhof and Skupski had no trouble winning the majority of their service points but they allowed themselves a break point late in the set that was a match point as well. Unfortunately for them, they were not able to win that deciding point giving their opponents the trophy.
