Canada’s
Bianca Andreescu has heaped praise on the current
world number one Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz after his famous triumph in
Wimbledon.
The 20-year-old is now the talk of the town after securing
his maiden title in London last month where he defeated Serbia’s legendary
tennis star Novak Djokovic in the final with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1,
3–6, 6–4.
Andreescu, who is the former US Open champion in 2019 where
she defeated America’s legendary tennis player Serena William in straight sets
in the final with a score of 6-3, 7-5, heaped praise on Alcaraz and stated that
his victory will give her and other players a much-needed motivation going
forward.
“I mean, Alcaraz is poised throughout the whole entire match,”
she said. “That was his first ever Wimbledon final, Yeah, the way he handled it
was incredible. He definitely deserved that.
"I know he won US Open but
Wimbledon is, it's different. It's like another, it's another story. It
definitely motivates me and he's only [20] still. That's a huge inspiration for
all of us.”
The victory was indeed a special one considering before this
year, Alcaraz’s best performance in the competition was reaching the fourth
round.
The triumph also halted Djokovic’s march towards equaling
the record of former world number one Switzerland’s Roger Federer of eight
Wimbledon titles.
