The clash between Ukraine’s
Elina Svitolina and Belarus’ Victoria
Azarenka avoided another controversy at the DC Open.
Both players were involved in arguably the most controversial
match during Wimbledon 2023 which ended with the fans booing the former world
number one after defeating her in three sets with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
The reason was that Svitolina refused to have a handshake
with her opponent in protest of Russia’s war with Ukraine.
The armed conflict between the European countries started back
in February last year and till now has resulted in a loss of lives on both sides.
Svitolina stood by her decision to not have a handshake with
any Russian or Belarusian player by stating prior to the match: “Every day I
take an opportunity to fight for my country. For me it’s a big motivation (the
match) — firstly I think for my country. It’s just another match, but in a way,
a lot of Ukrainians will be watching and supporting me. I will put the fighting
spirit on and just really fight for every single point.”
There was an expectation that the same might happen when the
draw was made for the DC Open show at Wimbledon.
But fortunately, the crowd understood much better than they
did in London and there was no booing despite both players once again avoiding
a handshake.
Svitolina, just Wimbledon, came out on top against Azarenka,
but this time in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4 on Sunday.
