Holger Rune
accused the ATP of often being disadvantaged on the courts where he plays,
following the release of the US Open schedule.
The Danish
player is the 4th seed at Flushing Meadows, marking the first time he has held
such a high seeding position. This ranking allows him to avoid facing the top
three seeds, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev, until the
semifinals if the favorites progress.
Despite his
favorable seeding, Rune's first match will be played on Court 5. On the same
day, the three main courts will host a total of six men's matches, and five of
these matches involve players with lower rankings than Rune.
Casper
Ruud, who holds the 5th seed, is in a similar situation and will play on Court
17, which is the fourth largest court in terms of capacity. Rune humorously
commented on the organization's decision via Twitter:
“Usopen
site map. In case you can find court 5, this is where I play my first match
Monday followed by 11:00,” Rune wrote.
The
20-year-old tennis player responded to an interview with TV2 Denmark, where one
of the tennis analysts described the scheduling as "disrespectful."
“I completely
agree. It is two ATP managers/supervisors who always give me the worst courts.
So that’s how it is.” World No. 4 said in response.
“100
percent (there is something in it). But I don’t mind complaining about it. I
have a tournament to win and I have to be focused. I have to do my best, no
matter what court I’m on,” Rune added.
The Danish
tennis player will make his debut in the first round on Monday against the
Spanish player
Roberto Carballes Baena. Their head-to-head record stands at
1-1, and they last faced each other in the second round of this year's
Wimbledon, with Rune securing a victory with a score of 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-4.
