Cameron Norrie won the 2021 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with a stellar comeback over Nikoloz Basilashvili and the Brit was over the moon following the win.
It's been a fantastic season for Cameron Norrie with the British player now up to 10th in the ATP Rankings. He is firmly in the mix for Turin which seemed impossible only a fortnight ago. All of that came because of a brilliant run in the desert that saw him crowned the Indian Wells Masters champion. After the match, Norrie said:
“It means so much to me, my biggest title. I’m so happy. I can’t even describe it right now. It was a strange match today but absolutely massive for me and my team. I can’t really believe it. If you’d have told me I’d have won before the tournament started I wouldn’t have believed you, so it’s amazing.”
Norrie had some early issues as he lost the opening set 3-6 but he rallied superbly to win the next two 6-3 6-1 and capture the title. Explaining what happened he said:
“I was a little bit uncomfortable. It was quite windy and… for a stage he went through, he hit so many winners and it was tough for me to get some confidence on my rally balls because the rallies were really short. He was just blasting winners, so when I made a couple of those big shots at that 5-4 game in the second set it gave me a lot of confidence."
For Norrie, this win is a major one as he improved to 2-5 in the finals which is less than ideal but in the biggest one, he rose to the occasion. He finished it up with:
“I’ve been really enjoying my tennis and been enjoying being out on the court and competing in the big moments. I’m just really pleased with how I handled the occasion. I think I’m doing a lot better with that this year. I lost a lot of those finals, so it’s nice to get the big one today.”
