Jannik
Sinner crowned another great week by defeating
Daniil Medvedev in the final of
the ATP 500
Vienna Open, securing his 10th career title.
The two
tournament favorites met in an epic final that lasted over three hours. This
time, Sinner prevailed over Medvedev with a score of 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-3 in a
rivalry that has seen them compete in four finals this year.
Until the
final of the Miami Open, Medvedev had a 6-0 advantage in their head-to-head
matchups. However, the last two encounters, in Beijing and Vienna, favored the
Italian. After winning his tenth career title, Sinner mentioned that it was one
of the best matches he has ever played:
“It took a
lot of mental & physical strength. To finish the match, it was a really
mental thing. For sure in the top 3 or top 5 matches I’ve played in my life.
Playing finals is always special. Especially against Daniil where I lost so
many times,”
Jannik Sinner claimed.
“The last
time I won gave me confidence. Today was completely different than last time. I
made more serve and volleys there. Today I had to adapt. I’m happy with how I
handled the situation. A very, very good match today,” the Italian young star
added.
Sinner
extended his 2023 win record to 56, the most by an Italian tennis player. On
his way to the title, he defeated Ben Shelton (ranked 15th), Lorenzo Sonego
(ranked 52nd), Frances Tiafoe (ranked 14th), Andrey Rublev (ranked 5th), and
Daniil Medvedev (ranked 3rd).
Now, both
players are headed to the Paris Masters, the last tournament before the ATP
Finals. As the third and fourth seeds, Medvedev and Sinner will start in the
second round, with their opponents yet to be confirmed.
Medvedev
will face the winner of the match between Grigor Dimitrov and Lorenzo Musetti,
while Sinner awaits the outcome of the match between American players J.J. Wolf
and Mackenzie McDonald.
