Spain’s young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has revealed the reason his coach cried at the end of the China Open. The 21-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz recently participated in the ATP 500 event in Beijing, where he lifted the title after beating the current world number one in the final in a thrilling contest with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. It was the Spaniard’s third consecutive win over Sinner this year, whereas it was the Italian tennis star’s first defeat in the final of an event in 2024.
After the match, Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, was seen in tears as he and the rest of the team celebrated the young tennis sensation's win. The four-time Grand Slam winner was recently quoted in a report by The Tennis Gazette, where he explained the reason behind Ferrero’s tears. He said that one reason could be the team’s hard work behind the scenes after a difficult few months.
“Well, I didn’t see him crying,” he said. “It was a really special win for me, lifting this trophy in front of my team, part of my family. It was a great moment for me. I guess he got emotional at the end because we all know what we went through the last month or the last two months. It was a really difficult moment on the court, off the court. As I said in the speech, thanks to them I started to get the joy back playing the matches, and practicing, and I got motivated again. I really wanted to travel, to play tournaments again. Probably after the American swing, I was a little bit down, that I didn’t want to touch a racquet for a while.”
