Frances Tiafoe has expressed his disappointment about being defeated by Dan Evans in the quarter-finals at the DC Open.
World No. 10 Tiafoe had a good run at the ATP 500 event in Washington. The tournament's second seed began by winning in straight sets against Aslan Karatsev in the opening round. He then went on to defeat rising talent Juncheng Shang 6-2, 6-3. However, the American ultimately failed to progress to the semi-finals, losing to ninth-seed Evans, who won the match 6-4, 7-5. Due to rain delays at the tournament, Tiafoe was forced to play his match against Shang just six hours before facing Evans, giving him little time to rest in-between.
Speaking in the press conference after the match, the 25-year-old admitted that experiencing a defeat in front of a home crowd was difficult. "Yes, it's a tough defeat to accept. It's very difficult for me. Everyone was definitely here to see me play and win. It was hard. I think I'm at that moment in my career where I have to go far, play in the final and win them. He [Evans] played a great game, but it still hurts," he said.
In terms of his first match of the day, Tiafoe's thoughts were positive, and he also praised his opponent in the evening's match.
"The first match of the day was really positive. I think I played pretty well. I felt really comfortable during the match. Then, in this evening's match, I was slow and I made many mistakes. But Evans played exceptionally well: he also told me that he only hit free sixes," he said before adding, "There are some things I could have done better."
He also expressed his happiness at the crowd, saying: "The support of the crowd? It was amazing, amazing. I have never felt such emotions here, they supported me incredibly. Everyone was screaming, it felt like a Grand Slam tournament. This is one of the tournaments that I want to win one day.
I'll try to make up for it next week." Tiafoe is now set to compete at the Canadian Open next week, where he will face wildcard Milos Raonic in the first round.
