Novak Djokovic Australian Open 2021 1
Novak Djokovic is only one win away from history with the Serbian expressing, gratitude and relief following his win over Alexander Zverev at the US Open.
The match against Zverev was expectedly a trick one and Djokovic needed to play 5 sets in order to win it but after the match, he expressed relief that he was able to do it. The key moment in the match came in the 3rd set which Djokovic won. Zverev did come back to win the 4th but it left him completely drained physically and Djokovic ran away with it in the decider 6-2.
Speaking about the match he said:
"Clinching the third set was a big relief, pa then my focus dropped a bit. It’s a great win, I’m proud of the fight I delivered. Could have better, but I did in the most important set."
Djokovic was once again asked about the calendar slam and while he expressed frustration earlier about the questions being repeated every day he was more understanding and answered:
"Keeping things simple. I am aware of history, but I try to lock in into what works for me. I said on the court, I will treat it as it is my last match since it’s perhaps the most important match in my career. One of the Bryant and Lakers rings, they won fourth game and were 3-1 up. He said “why should I be happy right now, job is not done”. Motivation is there, more than ever probably, but job is not done."
The opponent in the final will be a familiar face in Daniil Medvedev who will play his 3rd grand slam final and 2nd in New York. Djokovic and Medvedev faced off in Melbourne earlier this year and Novak was able to win that match rather easily.
